  Generelle notater:

Ivar Buch, age 89, passed away in Austin, Texas on December 26th, 2017 following complications due to a hip fracture. Ivar was born in Farsund, Norway on December 12th, 1928 to Hildur Abrahamsen and Ivar Winfeldt Buch. In 1933 the family left Norway for Haifa, Palestine (subsequently Israel) where Iraq Petroleum Company had offered his father a position as a Chief Mooring Master. Ivar and his younger brother, Alf, attended The German School until 1939, when the Germans were interned at the beginning of World War II. They then attended St. Luke's (British) School until 1946 when Ivar graduated high school. He obtained his American citizenship during his time in Palestine.

In the summer before college, Ivar worked as a galley boy on an oil tanker, earning free passage from Haifa to New York. Ivar attended Clarkson University in New York, where he joined the ROTC and obtained his Bachelor's degree in Engineering in 1951. Upon graduation he joined Mobil Oil, and moved to Leopoldville, Belgium Congo (now Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Here he met his future wife, Frieda, who was working at the U.S. Embassy. They married April 10th, 1954 in Palisades Park, New Jersey. Their international posts began with Syria, followed by Peru, Colombia, a second posting in Peru, Germany, Nigeria, and a second posting in Colombia. After Ivar's retirement from Mobil Oil in 1984 he joined the International Executive Service Corps, which gave them opportunities to live in Bulgaria and Costa Rica. When in the States they made their home in Connecticut, first in Westport and then Greenwich. Following Ivar's second retirement they enjoyed living on Lake Balboa in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas before moving to Austin, Texas.

Ivar had a knack for languages. By the time he graduated high school, he was fluent in Norwegian, German and English, and his overseas assignments gave him the opportunity to become fluent in French and Spanish as well. He enjoyed traveling the world, adding to his vast knowledge of geography, and developing a fondness for great cuisine and fine wines along the way. He was an accomplished pianist and loved music, particularly classical music, often attending the opera and the symphony in places he lived. Ivar enjoyed a wide variety of sports throughout his life, particularly swimming, golf, tennis, snow skiing, and sailing.

Ivar was a sweet man and a patient father to his four children. He instilled in them the importance of education and spent much of his free time teaching them the sports and hobbies he loved. He was very proud of being both a U.S. Citizen and of his Norwegian heritage. Ivar's children fondly recall the many summer trips back to Norway to visit relatives, and hearing their father speak his native language.

He leaves behind daughter Christine Buch; son Philip Buch, Philip's wife Kathleen, their three children Jackson, Charlotte, and Cooper; daughter Carla Davis, her husband Scott, their daughter Erika; son-in-law Tim Wilschetz, his two children Emily and Daniel; his sister-in-law Joan Buck and her children, as well as many friends. Ivar is predeceased by Frieda, his wife of 63 years; by daughter Carol Buch and by his brother Alf Buck.
The family would like to thank Seton and the assisted living, memory, and nursing floors at Querencia at Barton Creek for their excellent care of Ivar. They are planning a private funeral service and celebration of life.
