The marriage was obviously not a
happy one as Bert left after six weeks to go to Wellington. He promised to send for her and
forward money for her to live on. This never happened.
A court appearance on 8 February 1915 resulted in Bert being ordered to pay 7s 6d per
week towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child. As later confirmed, the marriage to
Elizabeth did not give rise to any children so this child was the result of a previous liaison,
(and perhaps the reason for leaving his marriage).
An entry in the Police Gazette dated one week later (15 February 1915 refers to a warrant
for Bertie's arrest for failure to pay maintenance of his child (since deceased!). The arrears
(including funeral expenses) now amounting to £9.
Another warrant was issued on Bertie on 22 June 1915. This time for being in default of
maintenance for his wife Elizabeth. It was cancelled on 27 October 1915, presumably
having been paid.

Maintenance arrears were still a problem and a further court appearance on 21 May 1917
required him to pay 10s a week off arrears of £9 or face two weeks imprisonment. This
would have to be the maintenance arrears from his deceased illegitimate child.
Another visit to court on 31 May 1917 was for a more serious charge. Apparently, in
marrying Lillian Archer he had omitted to divorce Elizabeth first, thereby committing
bigamy. He pleaded guilty.
