  Generelle notater:

Jorgen Wiig emigrated from Norway in 1886. He arrived in New Zealand 2 yars later. His application for Naturalisation was approved and noted in the Daily Telegraph dated 28 Aug 1893 where he is referred to as a Master Mariner.

The first record of his existence in New Zealand is in the Poverty Bay Herald of
1 August 1888 regarding a claim for £2 7s 6d for damage done by the Harbour crane to
Captain Wiig's boat the Leo. This was to be the first of a number of cases of litigation
involving Jørgen. It was also the year of the birth of his first child.

On 25 April 1889 the Poverty Bay Herald reported the start of a long wrangle between
Captain Wiig and the owner of the Awaroa. Amongst proceedings were Jørgen being
arrested, then suing for wrongful imprisonment.
On 25 July 1890, the Daily Telegraph mentions a cutter Venus with Captain Wiig (Master and
Agent) arriving in Napier from Gisborne.
He was to sail her for several years with the last mention of her being a rough voyage taking
11 days sailing from Napier to Gisborne.
From 1893 he starts using the name George (not Jørgen). The name "Jørgen" is not so suitable in English talking countries, this probably why he changed his name to "George".
He become a New Zealand citizen and adjudged bankrupt. George Wiig was adjudged bankrupt
in Gisborne on 3 May. He must have moved to Napier around this time as he was living in a
five-roomed house in Grey Street and was letting rooms out for an additional income. [An
application was made to the Supreme Court for an Order of Discharge from Bankruptcy on
23 February 1895.]
In 1900, George appeared on the Electoral Roll at the same address in Napier
as his wife for the last time.
